Exercise is NOT the key to tackling obesity

Obesity is a condition where an individual is grossly fat or overweight. This condition has steadily risen to higher levels with each passing year. People are investing a lot of money trying to combat this condition and until recently, exercise hardly tackles the obesity condition. Experts from the British Journal of Sports Medicine bust the myth on the relation between obesity and physical activity.

The prime cause of obesity is unhealthy eating habits and sedentary lifestyles. Indulgence in foods filled with excess sugar and carbohydrates accelerates the stockpiling of calories in the body, which is later stored as fat. Various medical specialists have openly criticized beverage and fast food companies who have emphasized that physical exercise helps one to lose weight.

Physical exercise is good in helping diseases such as diabetes, heart diseases, and dementia, but you cannot rely on it to lose weight. London-based cardiologist, Dr. Aseem Malhotra, one of the critics of beverage and fast food companies, is concerned with the messages put across in advertising of highly carbonated foods and drinks, that “you can consume anything but will be all right as long as one exercise.”

Specialists across the world recommend a healthy lifestyle to manage weight. A solution to obesity can also not rely on a single approach, and it is rather unwise to downplay the role of physical exercise for a healthy lifestyle. A well-balanced diet with regular exercise will constitute a healthy way of life.

For obese and overweight persons, weight loss programs that combine diet and physical activity are successful in weight loss. This regimen under the guidance of a physician will reverse the effects of obesity and help in weight management. Presently food companies are under the regulation to display the contents of packaged foods on labels, this way an individual will keep track of their calorie intake.
